General Resources


You can find a list of BME graduate student resources compiled here. This folder contains multiple helpful documents put together by past CCNY BME graduate students. It folder is being constantly updated and some documents may be out of date (check the year). Some helpful items include:

  • Course Info/ Requirements scheduling exams etc. 

  • HR/ RF/ Tax info

  • Useful contacts

  • Animal experiments info

  • Housing (see International Student doc.)

International Students

​

If you're an international student coming in, we've prepared some helpful information here. This includes what to do before class, social security, taxes, getting a phone, housing etc.

Plan Your PhD

​

This page has all the information you need to plan out your course load and what to register for in order to meet the PhD requirements. 

​

CUNYfirst

CUNYfirst is a CUNY wide system that allows you to manage your courses, get transcripts, pay your tuition, etc. You can learn more about that here​. You will use your CCNY credentials given to you once a CUNYfirst account is created for you.  

​

E-Permit

You can take courses at other CUNY schools including the graduate center. In order to do so you will need an "EPermit" which allow you to register for classes outside of CCNY on CUNYfirst.

Health & Insurance

​

As a graduate student, you should be offered health insurance (medical and dental). This is usually offered through NYSHIP. If you need more information ask your PI, your fellow graduate students or contact bmephd@ccny.cuny.edu.

​

If you need health services check out resources by CCNY. They also have forms that you need to submit to the college including immunization. 

​

Paperwork for Funding

​

Graduate student stipends to cover tuition and costs can come through several outlets either CCNY or through the CUNY research foundation (RF) or other. If your funding is coming from RF then these are some forms you may have to fill out and submit.

Paying Taxes and Funding

​

You are required by law to pay taxes (even international students). There are some tax exemptions that you can claim when filing taxes so you should be aware of those. For more info check out these documents.

Tech Resources at CUNY

​

Here are a list of technical resources that you should be aware of. 

  • Most graduate students are alloted a @ccny.cuny.edu account as well as @citymail.cuny.edu account. With that you can access several things including:

    • Unlimited Zoom rooms (@cuny account)​

    • College faculty communications (@cuny account)​

    • Free One Drive storage

    • Free Google Drive storage

    • Free Dropbox storage

    • Free Github private repo access/Github Pro

    • Free Microsoft Office resources

  • As a CUNY student you have access to tons of research databases at the CCNY library here. You can access full text articles and even textbooks  through different databases (i.e. Pubmed--articles or EBSCO--ebooks) by going through the CCNY library portal. In short:

    • Pick a database (i.e. Pubmed)​

    • On pubmed search for an article you'll see "Find it! @ CUNY" 

    • If the article isn't free you can click on "Find it! @ CUNY" and login with your CCNY credentials to see if CUNY as access to the article/book.

    • If you cannot get access to and article or book please ask one of the GSA organizers, we can point you to alternative methods. 

  • Looking to brush up your skills? Check out online courses here.​

  • You should apply for a New York Public Library (NYPL) Card here. You can do so remotely (as long as you live in NYC). It grants you access to tons of resources from the NYPL including digital media and online courses.
